The phase of construction that resulted in the present appearance of this splendid monument dates from th
e Hellenistic period, when the theater was completely rebuilt. Further modifications were made in the Roman era but without altering the previous layout. The impressive semicircular \b \cf1 \ATXht3 cavea\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 has tiers of seating divided by a
single corridor (diazoma), on whose walls were engraved the names of the gods of Olympus and the rulers of Syracuse, used to distinguish the various sectors of the theater. \par
